Lu Deqing and her friends dress for an outing. In her youth, Lu says, her mother would wear the elaborate headdress of the Buyi people on a daily basis, even while working at home or in the field. Village youth of today show little interest in the traditions of their parents. They want to get out of the village and experience the life they see on TV, get jobs and make money. The women lament the passing of the old traditions: hand weaving, fine embroidery, and the mountain songs.
